Real Animal
(Back Porch/EMI)
Long ago, Alejandro Escovedo was tagged with the label "guy who deserved greater recognition," from his early punk days with Rank and File, cow-punk/alt-country with True Believers or solo folk-pop (see the 2001 album A Man Under the Influence). The 2006 album The Boxing Mirror garnered more acclaim because it dealt with a catastrophic illness and a near-miss with death. On Real Animal---his ninth solo jaunt---the man has come alive again, leading rocking tracks such as "Always a Friend" and second slot-song "Chelsea Hotel '78" and delivering beautiful ballads such as "Swallows of San Juan" or "Slow Down" with sure and steady tenor.
