True love and a super terrorist
by Jacob Boon
A love story between Kirk/Spock (Chris Pine/Zachary Quinto) barely gussied up as summer blockbuster, Star Trek Into Darkness finds the crew of the Enterprise on the hunt for a super-strong terrorist (Benedict Cumberbatch, thankfully) who's waging a one-man war on the Federation. Pine and Quinto (Pinto?), refreshing in their first outing, already feel stale in roles that ratchet ever more towards imitation.…

Journalism!
by Jacob Boon
Journalists can be such insufferable pricks sometimes. Or so thinks the former domestic terrorist trying to put his past behind him in the quite watchable The Company You Keep.…

Heartbreak, a coming-of-age tale and a kid named Neckbone
by Jacob Boon
The simplicity of childhood gets washed away in Mud, a Mark Twain-like boys' adventure fable. When fourteen-year-old Ellis and his best friend Neckbone (a name that never ceases to be entertaining) investigate an abandoned boat, stranded high up in a tree after a devastating flood, the boys find a mysterious drifter whose name is Mud (Matthew McConaughey).…

by Jacob Boon
King of the summer blockbusters, Terrence Malick returns with a vengeance in the broody slab of melancholia, To the Wonder. Olga Kurylenko is a French ex-pat brought to small town America with her precocious daughter by stoic boyfriend Ben Affleck.…

Likeable and funny cast were actually allowed to be likeable and funny
by Jacob Boon
Everyone involved in Tyler Perry Presents: Peeples, a lacklustre meet-the-parents romantic comedy, deserves some sort of medal for keeping out anything even resembling Perry's trademark cinematic poison. Regular guy Wade (ever loveable Craig Robinson) crashes his girlfriend's family reunion in the Hamptons to ask for her hand in marriage, only to find that his lady love (Kerry Washington) has kept their relationship a secret from her overprotective daddy (national treasure David Alan Grier).…

by Jacob Boon
Jason Buxton's locally-made, festival darling finally comes to theatres in the earnest depiction of youth justice, Blackbird. Teenager Sean Randall is your typical outsider goth.…

Uncluttered, clean and true
by Jacob Boon
It's man versus bureaucracy in a stunning true tale from New Brunswick, Still Mine. Elderly farmer Craig Morrison (a dressed-down James Cromwell) just wants to build a small house for his Alzheimer's stricken wife, the project offering a welcome usefulness in his autumn years.…

Flimsy plot, superstrong suit
by Jacob Boon
Tony Stark squares off against his greatest foe to date—panic attacks—in the inevitable Iron Man 3. After saving the planet from cyborg zombie aliens in The Avengers, Stark (the getting-a-little-old-for-this Robert Downey Jr.) retreats to his workshop to tinker with his fantastical toys.…

Needs more sparkle
by Jacob Boon
A somewhat true story is hacked up and spit out as superficial feel-good '60s melodrama in the disappointing Australian movie, The Sapphires. Three Aboriginal sisters (and their light-skinned cousin) with some golden pipes get the chance of a lifetime when a washed up producer (Chris O'Dowd) helps them tour USO shows during the Vietnam War.…

Begging for the MST3K treatment
by Jacob Boon
A sci-fi movie of the week somehow ends up at your local cinema in the embarrassing Canadian horror film, The Colony. In a future where artificial weather has blocked out the sun, blanketing the planet in constant snowfall, a small group of survivors huddle together in an isolated bunker.…

I'd like a large popcorn with butter and cognitive dissonance, please
by Jacob Boon
One of the more cognitively dissonant films in theatres, The Big Wedding is an astounding train wreck of a romantic comedy. When their adopted son's biological mother comes from Columbia for her child's wedding, divorced parents Robert De Niro and Diane Keaton must pretend to still be married lest they offend the Roman Catholic's strict morals.…

Powerful and raw
by Jacob Boon
It's tempting to call The Disappeared a mixture of The Perfect Storm and survival-horror one-note Open Water. Doing so would give you a sense of how the unflinching film follows six fishermen adrift in the North Atlantic.…

Michael Bay proves himself as disastrous with "small pictures" as he is with blockbusters in Pain & Gain—the beach bod true crime flick that's oozing with machismo. Hypnosis heist = coolest genre of 2013?
by Jacob Boon
Danny Boyle's hypnosis heist caper, Trance, crams an overload of the director's trademark flourishes into a belaboured screenplay until the entire enterprise falls apart. James McAvoy stars as an auctioneer who suffers from a bout of amnesia after crooks attempt to steal a priceless painting.…

Boom, roasted!
by Jacob Boon
A substance abuse recovery and Christian-redemption film, Home Run is a yawn of a parable, barely made into a movie. Baseball hotshot Corey Brand is forced to spend his suspension for a DUI coaching a loveable team of misfit kids back in his sleepy hometown.…

Don't you dare miss it
by Jacob Boon
Lives keep bouncing off each other, every choice threatening those left standing, in the staggering The Place Beyond The Pines. Ryan Gosling offers yet another brilliant performance, this time playing a shade of his character from Drive—a talented motorcyclist filled with violence who begins robbing banks to provide for the infant son he didn't know he had.…

Slick ads, political imagery and a triumph over democratic apathy
by Jacob Boon
"It looks like a Coca-Cola commercial!" one socialist organizer says of the political ad Gael Garcia Bernal has come up with to topple Chilean dictator Augosto Pinochet. And why not?…

Important message needs more substance
by Jacob Boon
Junior high biology lessons are passed off for life-changing revelations in the ecological mess Revolution. This follow-up to his 2006 film Sharkwater, finds Canadian conservationist Rob Stewart refuting his entire previous movie, as it'll be impossible to save the sharks if the entire ocean dies off from climate change.…

I don't know how high your hopes are for this one, but lower them immediately
by Jacob Boon
A franchise continues in Scary Movie 5. The latest approximation of an actual movie that spoofs and goofs whatever's lying around the house.…

Charismatic and hopeful
by Jacob Boon
Jackie Robinson breaks major league baseball's colour barrier in the routine, but charismatic 42. Brooklyn Dodgers owner Branch Rickey (a blubbering crank of a Harrison Ford) decides to stir the pot by hiring a negro player, against the advice and threats of his league, his advisors and most of the baseball-attending public.…

You really can't top Raimi
by Jacob Boon
Those unfamiliar with the original may shrug off this remake of Evil Dead as a sub-par Cabin in the Woods knockoff. Unfortunately, they'd be right.…

As usual, a sassy sloth steals the show
by Jacob Boon
Bad jokes meet vibrant visuals in the (spoiler warning) historically inaccurate CGI kids flick, The Croods. Emma Stone voices Eep, the broad-shouldered teenage daughter of the modern Stone Age family Crood.…
