We don't need to improve the roads
We don't need to get 18 wheelers out of the downtown, off Hollis & Water streets.
We don't need to fix the transit system.
Nor do we need improved bus terminals.
We don't need better health care or tax breaks NO No No !

What we need is another convention centre paid for WITH OUR TAXES.
Bigger, taller with even less downtown parking than we have now !

NONE of that other stuff is nearly as important as a new Convention Centre... a new building for the political & politically connected to have their conventions in !

Hazardous spot, as they are lucky to get to 50 kph at the merge while traffic is doing 90 or 100.

IF they need to do some testing or test plots to see what's going on with this stuf...IMO instead of putting it on public land, it should be spread on each & every councillors yard, that goes for the Mayor as well.
Let's make sure they along with all the top Brass in our wonderful Civil Service, & all the water & sewers workers get the 'pleasure' of checking it out & have their yards covered in it as well.

Something tells me a whole new way of dealing with this will come from such a "hands on approach"...which is why there isn't a snowballs chance in hell any of these windbags we presently have representing the various districts will allow any of that shit on their property.
But wouldn't it be great if they did do it & get what I believe, they truely deserve !

A friend just pointed out to me the example of San Francisco, where they had (possibly still have) a combination of local and city-wide elected officials. This setup maintains local representation while also allowing citizens with certain interests who are dispersed throughout the city to be adequately represented.

There will be little to no incremental 'office' expenses since the staff will replace an existing councilor, using that councilors existing office in city hall with all the amenities that are already available for councilors.

I see the concern about the quiet voices getting even quieter, but the opposite is also possible.

issmat - you may think two staff for each councillor is cheaper but you forget the office & equipment rental. Each staffer would have a salary of $40,000 plus the cost of benefits.
In effect you would entrench the councillors to an even greater effect than now and I don't see how that would change anything.
If people want less councillors then I would like to hear who they want to remove from the city hall landscape.
You and others need to adddress the issue of councillors serving on municipal boards and committees and if they should be replaced by citizens.
In Toronto the council had the last meeting on Friday August 27.

Thanks for your thoughtful arguments, issmat--much more compelling reading than a simple "smaller council is better." I can see the logic in some of your points, but I'm still not sure that a councillor representing more constituents will do a better job of representing the aggregate opinion, for two main reasons:
1) In politics, all voices do not speak with the same volume.
