This year marks the 250th birthday of The Halifax Common or "The Commons" as it's most commonly referred (pun intended).

If you’re from Halifax you probably have a memory associated with this open space in the downtown area; whether it’s putting soap bubbles in the famous fountain, drinking on the bleachers, getting yelled at by patrons of the surrounding apartments to shut up, guessing what sort of bodily fluids are in that barely swimmable pool or getting chased by the dogs off their leash.…

The time of year that people deem awards season is over, but not for Canadian foodies. Gold Medal Plates, the country's most prestigious culinary competition, will return to Halifax October 17.…

Bedford is about to get a whole lot louder because Taz Records' new location opens tomorrow.

Owner James Donnelly says he has wanted to open a second location for quite some time and Bedford made the most sense.…

From today's exciting announcement from Hal-Con:

"We’re excited to welcome the creative genius behind one of the internet’s most famous cats to Hal-Con this year (Nov 8-10, WTCC). Christopher Torres’s 8-bit creation of an intergalactic feline with a toaster-pastry body who flies through space on a rainbow trail exploded onto the web in 2011 and Nyan Cat was born.…

The Madonna Painter is really quite extraordinary.

The play, by French Canadian playwright Michel Marc Bouchard, is set in a small Quebec town in 1918 (although the time and place was not explicitly clear, at least to me, in the Taboo Theatre production) during a devastating flu epidemic.…

It's hard to express how happy this makes me. Tonight marks the inaugural meeting of Halifax's Ladies Beer League, a righteous craft club giving we beer-loving women (or beer-hating women for that matter) a place to get together to learn about and think about great beer, plan beer-related events, and of course, do some drinking.

The crew will get together for a few brews on the second Thursday of every month.…

For most, sidewalk cafes mean a lovely dining experience outside with friends. But for people who use wheelchairs or have reduced vision, the cafes can be an in-navigable obstacle course.…

Thirty-some years ago a fire blazed through the Chebucto Street townhouses. Looking out for their neighbours, residents from surrounding streets pulled up its socks and got together to help the people who’d not just lost belongings, but their homes too.…

Zac Crouse’s Paddle to the Ocean project isn’t just good music and film, it’s starting conversations about mental health, too.
            by Lindsay Raining Bird
"I was going to do this long-distance kayak trip with my friend, but he died while we were kayaking together," says Zac Crouse, who was diagnosed with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder as a result of the accident. Afterward, what was originally going to be a film about touring his first solo album You Plan to Do Nothing from Ottawa to Halifax via active transportation took a different turn.…

The white truck known for flavourful fusion food and helping kickstart the local surge in street food will have you crying Wolf.
            by Melissa Buote
I see the little clapboard sign for the Food Wolf on the sidewalk before I see the truck itself, tucked away slightly off of Gottingen Street, across from the Marquee Club on the corner of Falkland, in the gravel lot they call Squiggle Park. Allison and I meet there shortly after the truck arrives for their 5:30 supper run.…

        Apatownies pull off high concept
            by Jacob Boon
The apocalypse is as good a time as any for a crew of vapid actors to deal with their issues in This Is The End. Featuring a slew of Apatow-regulars (Apatownies?), TITE features the end of the earth raining down upon California.…

There was something about Stephanie MacDonald that sparkled. Photographer Tony Fouhse can’t put his finger on what it is that led him to help her but since that day, their journey together has been one of honesty and courage.…

Women should be able to walk the streets of Halifax without being intimidated and frightened by obnoxious guys.
            by Ainslie Moss
The other night, two friends and I were on our way to Gus' Pub, and, on Agricola Street, we encountered a man and two of his friends coming the opposite direction. The most obvious guy was a large, fairly intimidating dude who was staggering and holding a beer in each hand.…

(((Parentheses))) Gallery’s Mis-Fit exhibit redefines gallery show expectations with one-off works that positively radiate.
            by Lindsay Raining Bird
It's not an exhibit you're likely to see anywhere else, but the one-off works at Parentheses Gallery will redefine your expectations of a gallery show. Mis-fit is a collection of work from 38 artists, unique works that are "other" in some way---some were created to fit the show's theme like Jon Claytor's painting of a young man wearing a Misfits tank top, but the most fascinating pieces in the show are the ones carrying artistic baggage---the work that the artist might not have considered worthy or the outsider art that resulted from trying something completely new.…
