“Hello, gorgeous specimen”, is what folks will say once your neck is decked out in one of these handmade bow ties from local designer, and second-hand clothing curator extraordinaire, Anna Gilkerson. A part of her newly launched MAKENEW MAN department---boasting both gorgeous vintage materials and top-notch fabrics---the Spring 2013 Bowtie Collection arrived last week, bringing with it not just fine looking, elegant-yet-summery bow ties, but pocket squares, too.…

Celebrate Mother’s Day weekend with one mother of an event—the second annual Open City, where I LOVE LOCAL and over 100 retailers and restos team up to make bring Halifax to the next level, takes place on this Saturday, May 11. After the resounding success of last year’s event (seriously, people freaked out, new businesses were born and community spirit boomed louder than the noon cannon) Open City is back and bigger, once again challenging people to explore their own city via deals, activities and backdoor eats.…

Look for the yurt this weekend when the Fair Trade Bazaar (May 11 and 12, 10am-5pm) takes over Victoria Park, focussing on globally-conscious shopping and adding yet another awesome element to your Open-City-inspired downtown adventures. Celebrate World Fair Trade Day, and Mother's Day, by shopping in this open air market, that'll feature loads of jewellery, accessories and, of course, unique, eco-friendly textile art from TAMMACHAT Natural Textiles and African Threads, both of which will be showing off new works they’ve collected during their travels to South East Asia and Africa.…

Halifax’s first Makerspace is in the making. Following the brilliant model that cities across the country and world have, a small group of keen Haligonians is beginning to build a community lab, workshop and collaboration station.…

As spring starts to creep in, so does wedding season, and just as brides and grooms to be start tearing their hair (and each others' hair) out in plan-mode, in swoops Boutique Joliette ( 1870 Hollis Street, 405-4057) with a little assistance.

The Petals & Pearls event is a special one day soirée that's ideal for those seeking style inspiration.…

We already thought buying local was an easy choice but now, thanks to a fat funding increase, it'll be even more so. A $250,000 investment from the province has doubled the yearly funding for Select Nova Scotia, a six-year-old program that promotes the amazing and tasty food products made and grown right here under our noses.…

The next time you find yourself preparing to drop your painfully slow or completely busted Macbook from a third-storey window, consult Make it Go Computer (5185 Sackville Street, 444-4225). The new downtown business was born out of Splice, which has decided to go back to its roots and focus on the training and consulting side of computer wellness, leaving repair and retail in some very capable hands.…

In a city ridden with universities and colleges, it’s hard for every school to share the spotlight equally. At least this is the view of many NSCAD students and alumni who often watch their school’s triumphs and newsworthy accomplishments get cast aside as the light is shone on bigger, more prominent post-secondary spots.…

We hoped that the Temporarily Closed signs in the windows of Mise Au Green (5507 Spring Garden Road) were actually code for store renos, re-stocking or an extended vacation. But after some email bounce-backs and phone calls to Nowhereland we got confirmation that Halifax location of the classic-but-chic, French clothing store—which opened last June— has, in fact, permanently closed.

While I'm a firm believer that any day is a great day to do yoga (especially winter days and especially when the yoga is in a HOT room), this week would be an extra prime time to work on your practice. Opera sensation Measha Brueggergosman is visiting town, but this time its not for a face-melting performance, she'll be leading three classes at Bikram Yoga (1567 Grafton Street, 444-7660).…

Get ready to abandon winter completely as you join in celebrating the launch of Dreamboat Lucy’s fabulous spring and summer collection this weekend at Biscuit General Store (1661 Argyle Street, 425-5436). PEI’s sisterly design duo Louanna and Hilary Murphy will be debuting new looks and accessories in-store in pop-up-shop fashion on Saturday, March 23 (12-5pm), promising new looks, refreshments and prizes, too.…

As you may recall Turnstile Pottery Cooperative (2733 Agricola Street, 431-CLAY) will be disbanding at the end of May. This is your friendly reminder that your chances to take advantage of Turnstile's weekly Thursday drop-in sessions (7:30-9pm, $20) are running out—you've only got a few more weeks to join in on the fun. The final four will take place March 21, March 28 (also the last day to work with wet clay), April 4 (for glazing) and April 11 (glazing again).…
