Re: “How Halifax's concert scandal played out

A fascinating article. So much detail - it gives much more nuance to the story as opposed to "council bad". Mind you, TCL and council end up looking terrible, but not because of stupidity - more like being in for a penny in for a pound.

It looks like the parties involved thought they were going to get egg on their face anyway, so why not double down with taxpayer money and try to pull it off? Here`s why - it was not their money to spend. There`s one way to describe taking money that is under your stewardship for unpermitted use: theft. Well, may embezzlement, but that is no better.

$300,000 stolen; 300,000 residents in HRM. I smell a slogan, something like `I want my loonie back`. The crazy thing is that it didn`t have to be this small. HRM could have been on the hook for millions. Even worse, the concert could have been a success, in which case the illegal use of funds would never have come to light. It barely did even when the loss was apparent!

Re: “Pho Hoang Minh Vietnamese Restaurant

Reminded me of the small pho shops I seek out when I'm in Markham. It was just before closing and they were happy to serve ma a big delicious bowl of pho.

The sprouts were fresh and crispy and the basil was really fresh, too.

The broth was tasty, but not quite "simmered all day with bones in it" viscous. Still - it brought a smile to my slurping, gobbling face.

Had the sweet iced coffee - it was pretty good, but a little thin as well.

I will definitely eat here again. It holds its own, at least on the Pho front, and the staff is really friendly.
