OB, I feel for you. This is not your fault. Know there are allies here for you. I wrote the "Don't rape" feature, and I'm writing a follow-up article for Halifax Magazine about street harassment. If you want to share your story, please contact me at editorhilary at gmail dot com. I can keep your name out of it. -HB

Thanks everyone for your comments. I reported this story from Toronto on a tight deadline. My goal was to represent the strongest valid arguments I could find.

I agree I should have included at least one voice from the community, so I've reached out to several of the people and organizations suggested by "Robbie Macg" since writing this story.

I quoted Picnicface member Brian Macquarrie because he offered a valid argument in the form of humour that served to take the edge off a controversial story.

Also, I spelled last Zahra's name wrong initially, but it's been changed.

    Now you know. Spew forth.

Fair enough, Yumi -- Devil's advocacy doesn't always work.

    Thanks for the larf, Loukas!

Re: “Size 0 on a DIET?!
I'm about your height, OB, and between size 2 and 4. A few years ago I went down to a size 0 when I caught a virus that wouldn't let me keep anything down. I looked like a skeleton. And I got a lot of compliments. It was nasty. Not all the impetus comes from the media -- positive weight-loss feedback comes from social interaction too. So good on you for telling your friend your thoughts!

Yes, there is still sexism about. It is much less subtle, however, than this. Asserting that your sexuality is the only power you will ever have belittles women. We have powers of communication, collaboration, empathy, leadership, reason, education, and we can give birth to tiny people FROM OUR VAGINAS. I'm overwhelmed by our power. Shit. We RULE.
