Maybe you were too unattractive to wait tables, thus you chose to work to pump gas? That would explain the bitterness. :D
I walked home across the bridge yesterday and saw two cyclists on the walk way, looking totally fucking stunned.. maybe it was the OP thinking she was in the bike lane
I've worked in a lot of restaurants around this city and it's true, most of them hire on appearance. Is that unfair? Yes. But we cater to the public and most of the public don't want unattractive people touching their food.. Most places would go out of buisness if the costumers caught a glimpse at the kitchen staff.
Bro Tim, do you ask convience store clerks to change their products especially to suit your needs? ie "I don't want any peanuts in this Oh Henry bar" or do you ask your gas jockey to take time out of his already busy day to clean off the booster seat for your child? Come on. I am a server, and generally I don't mind if a rare costumer/table doesn't tip. Not everyone is going to. But I've said this before, if you ask us to go above and beyond as most of you do, then tip.
And by the way, we pool our tips at my work. The kitchen gets 25% and the rest is split amoung the amount of servers working. And we all claim our tips.
It's called the Paragon, OP.
As a server myself at a very popular restaurant, things can sometimes get chaotic. Therefore I am sympathetic and patient when I go out to eat.
Maybe the server could have been more apologetic, but it sounds like you are lacking manners and patience in the first place. Therefore you should probably stay home and cook your own dinner.
Whenever things get a little out of control for me at work, I do my best for all my tables, but definitely make my polite tables priorities.
And as for the manager, managers will always stick by their staff. Yes, a good manager would pick up a few tables or atleast help ensure the overall costumer service by running a few plates or taking a few orders.. but the fact that the manager went as far as to put you in your place, I'm sure you were even worse then you led on in your post, therefore your 1 cent tip is not worth putting up with you again.
I work as a server.. I do not expect a tip from every costumer, but if I go above and beyond and meet your special requests, I believe I deserve a tip. Some people may disagree but that's fine, most don't.
Anyway, OP.. I believe you handled the situation very well, but the fact that you're missing is that the family did not ASK for a free pizza. You took that upon yourself before even checking with them. Maybe if you had consulted them beforehand, she would have refused the extra pizza because she knew she was unable/unwilling to tip. You described them to seem very nice and they didn't bring you any trouble. Appreciate that. The resteraunt messed up, you are not owed anything by these people.
If the woman was a bitch, the father smelly, and the kids loud and messy, and they sent back the food themselves and put you out of your way? Yeah! You would deserve a tip in my opinion. But that wasn't the case.
But hey, I would have tipped you atleast the price of the pizza.. but that's because like I said, I'm a server.

The food was edible at most. The fish and chips was standard, nothing to write home about. Beyond that, everything else was terrible minus the great view. The service was miserable but I don't blame them. Shared the coconut shrimp as an app with a friend.. it was amazing they could make something so easy and standard so terrible. . 5 overdone shake n' baked shrimp, with "sweet chili sauce" aka salsa = 15 bucks! Really disapointing and a huge rip off.
If you are here from out of town, and you want a great view. Pop in for a beer at most, grab your food from a fish n chip stand on the pier, you'll be much better off.
