First let me say, Tina and Brenda were both on the streets due to pimps. Pimps that threatened and beat them. Second they were both murdered by two different serial killers.
I remember when I worked as a security guard in Dartmouth (High field park1997-99) . A drunk immigrant tennant's roomates kicked him out of 1st floor patio . the tennant kicked in the main glass door to get back in his apartment. I called HRM police who went into the apartment and started ransacking the apartment and taking anything small and valuble (CD's ,cash zippo lighters video games ) ETC. When the drunk tennant contested the search the police threatened to immediatly take him to the Airport and have him deported . Afterward police called me to there van where they asked me about how much I made at this job and gave me a share of the loot. I was afraid to not take it because there body language was threatening. I have been living in Alberta for past 11 years and when I tell my friends they just can't believe this sort of stuff happened.
As a man who was abused mentally and physically by my former wife, you should mention that there are abusers who are female as well. Unfortunately men are much less likely to report abuse than women so it is a hidden problem. The tactics of female abusers are the same. The issues faced by abused men are the same. Recognition and support for male victims is basically non-existant. This is not a gender issue. Women may be more often the victims but that should not mean we should call domestic violence "violence against women". It should be called "intimate partner abuse" as abuse also exists in lesbian and gay couple as well. Abusers abuse primarily because of a personality disorder, not because of the gender of the victim. Perhaps when the true causes of abuse are recognized the violence will stop.
have no doubt Countrynova there are some of us who know exactly who our police are and the RCMP here are no different...the Police Commission and justice ministers (2 Tory) are all in the know too and did whatever they must to shut down people reporting how dangerous our police force really is....I trust the crack smokers before I trust our police
I had an incident happen when our vehicle was stolen from our yard and I had the unfortunate event of having to deal with Halifax Police rather than RCMP. Halifax police found our truck with the culprit still in it sleeping, and he had used to truck to go on a crime spree breaking into houses. We got the truck back and found items he had stolen from peoples homes..nothing left of value of course, Im sure the police took anything worth taking, but to our suprise, we found crack pipes in the front of the truck and the culprits little "crack case" that he used to store his drug and parphanelia in. In this crack case, hidden under a secret compartment, was a head of narcotics police business card, which we thought was strange. Why would a crack head have that in his possession? We soon found out...when my husband called the daily news to let them know how shoddy the police work had been (finding the stolen goods still in our truck, crack pipes and even the crow bar the culprit was using to break into homes) we got a phone call from halifax police letting us know if we went to the newspapers again, the police would actually print "they're own story" which included the fact that my husband admitted to them that he did crack himself and the crack pipes were my husbands! I was shocked as my husband never did crack in his life, but that was how they protected theirselves...the culprit had been able to rat on someone to avoid charges of stealing our vehicle. He had told the police (susposedly) that we let him use the truck and with that, all charges were dropped and he didnt even do 1 day in jail! The police were not concerned with getting the victims stolen goods back to them and finding those crack pipes and this guy was let free becuase he Im sure, ratted on someone more important than him. I wanted to complain to the highest court about what they had done and said but was honeslty too afraid that they would harrass my family like they did the poor man who saw a police officer shoot a deer at night in burnside a few years before. They followed him, sat outside his house and harrassed his family until he decided he wouldnt testifiy. If I was stuck somewhere on a dark road at night, the halfifax police are the LAST people I'd want to drive by, only God knows what would happen to me after that!
Plus there has been a woman missing in Eastern Passage for over a decade -
Arlene McLean
- she may have been murdered by that Colonel that worked at Shearwater. But I doubt if the police care.

DID YOU KNOW THAT A FEW DAYS AFTER KIMBERLEY McANDREWS WENT MISSING A WITNESS CAME FORWARD AND REPORTED THAT ON THE DAY SHE DISAPPEARED AND AT THE MALL THAT SHE WAS LAST SEEN AT, THIS WITNESS SAID HE SAW A MAN CARRYING AN UNCONCIOUS YOUNG WOMAN AND PLACED HER IN THE BACK SEAT OF HIS CAR. HE TOOK A DISCRIPTION OF THE CAR AND LICENSE PLATE NUMBER AND GIVE IT TO THE POLICE. IT TURNED OUT TO BELONG TO A RICH PROFESSIONAL MAN FROM OUTSIDE HALIFAX,WHO HAS THE RIGHT KIND OF FRIENDS. AND THAT IS WHY HE WAS NOT INVESTIGATED.

Re: Kimberly Ann McAndrew - August 12, 1989 - Age 19 - Missing - Halifax, NS
« Reply #32 on: Today at 09:13:59 PM »Quote Modify Remove iwish; her family knew this, I would expect they'd hire a PI to run the license plate. I hope the witness gave a statement to the family. If not, they should track him down and ask him to write and sign one. Then they could lay private charges. I realize of course, the POI, being a person (person of influence) what a co-incidence! , that's the only way to go.

Hats off to "The Coast" for getting this article out. As a member of www.unsolvedcanada.com forum, I watch all the cases of missing and murdered. I could never decide which province had more injustice and police corruption - BC or Alberta (Edmonton area). After reading this article, I'm seeing NS (Halifax area) - especially for a small province - ranks way up there on the scales of "injustice and corruption". ...as does NFLD. What a disgrace!
....and in my opinion, the most serious cover-up I've seen in this end of the country is the Clayton Miller case in Cape Breton.
I am reading this for the first time since I am new to Halifax. I have a question that I hope will be responded to by someone who may read this article, which is now a bit dated but which I believe is still very relevant. Has there been any attempt to introduce Re-evaluation Counseling in the City? Either at a community or government level? (See: http://www.rc.org/)
"Re-evaluation Counseling is a process whereby people of all ages and of all backgrounds can learn how to exchange effective help with each other in order to free themselves from the effects of past distress experiences.
Re-evaluation Counseling theory provides a model of what a human being can be like in the area of his/her interaction with other human beings and his/her environment. The theory assumes that everyone is born with tremendous intellectual potential, natural zest, and lovingness, but that these qualities have become blocked and obscured in adults as the result of accumulated distress experiences (fear, hurt, loss, pain, anger, embarrassment, etc.) which begin early in our lives."
I've written this before, eleswhere,
But this has always made me wonder & the stupidity of it, causes me to shake my head & question the stupidity & wonder is this because of people's outdated religious belief's, fucking up peoples lives who aren't even members of any religious groups to begin with.
So- why is it, 2 consenting adults can meet somewhere...lets say a Bar. They decide to go back to one apartment & have sex. It is perfectly legal. They spend the night in each others company engaging in sexual activities .Nothing has been done to break our laws & they split up & decide to not bother with each other again.
No one bats an eye over their behaviour, although you practitioners of a religion will of course get your nickers in a knot & spew the usual diatribe based on your religious beliefs to any poor bastard close enough to hear.
Now you take those 2 same people, meeting in the same Bar & the older woman offers the young male $100.00 to come to her home for some adult fun. They're both over the age of consent, they're both going to spend a night having sex...yet because money has changed hands...it is now an illegal act !
That is IMO BULLSHIT ! Which is why the illogic of it causes me to shake my head at the stupidity.
The entire Prostitution Problem is actually Societies problem, by not supporting legalized Prostitution, by not allowing for safe working sites, permits from health practitioners, showing bi weekly medical screening, having access to programs for education etc.
By not having anything in place WE AS A SOCIETY ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE VIOLENCE, THE DRUG ADDICTION & THE PIMPING.
Because if these simple programs were allowed, women & men who now have no other choices, would be able to get help, they would be able to get off drugs, they wouldn't be hunted by pimp's , & they would be having frequent, regular medical exams. This would go along way to cleaning up this industry...& it is an industry& it at this time is an industry that criminals are profitting from.
You judgemental bastards & bitches may not like the fact, the simple fact that this has been around for thousands & thousands of years, means its going to continue to be around & we as a Society, as a Group of individuals need to stop the Judging of others & simply apply a little logic & compassion for others who have little or nothing now. If its legalized, that doesn't mean you have to go hire a Protitute once a month, you who have never even spoken to one before, won't have to speak to one if this was implemented. But it would be a way to remove the violence, get on top of mental & addiction problems, it would remove the criminal element, because the Government & all the services (including POLICE PROTECTION) would be available, & it would be the humane & IMO proper way to deal with this .
(typo) so the police WOULDNT have to investigate it
my friend jamie was murdered and they automatically ruled it a suicide so the police would have to investigate it. but it definitly wasnt a suicide, he was murdered and they ignored it posted pictures of him dead on the internet ! and disrespected him after he was gone.
The clearance rate would be FAR worse if all of the dead, naked hookers were included on the "Murdered" lists. But "Foul play is not suspected" in Halifax, when the victim is a hooker.
nobody was pulled or pushed or thrown to the ground she clearly falls on her own to try and escape the bouncer or make it look like the bouncer threw her, the bouncers body motion is goin in a completely different direction then hers right b4 she goes down and nobody held her down the guy in the suspenders just held her feet so she wouldn't kick the poor bouncer stupid little bitchthe only reason it looks like the bouncers takes her down is because he was holding on to her while she was falling trying to prevent her from smashing her head on the ground
the article is about violence against women. a reality that is all to common to a great number of women in canada and around the world.
the strong majority of violence that occurs towards women is perpetuated by men. and more often than not, the women who are experiencing violence at the hands of a man know who her attacker is in one way or another. perhaps this is why lezlie is making the connection.
and to those of you who think violence against women is "just violence that exists in our society," clearly you have no idea what it is like to live as a woman in our society. everytime i leave my house i have to consider things like what i'm wearing, where i am going, is it too late to go by myself? or how about when i walk down the street and i feel someone staring at me, licking their lips or making other crude gestures? or how about when i'm at the bar and someone thinks it is their right to grab my ass or touch my breast as i walk by? or how about living with someone you know is physically stronger than you and could hurt or kill you if they wanted?
i understand and appreciate that men have no idea what it is like to live in our society as a woman. i have no idea what men are up against, so i don't expect them to know what we are up against. but i don't react to the issues that seriously concern them with indifference. i don't brush it off and tell them it's all in their head. i try and have empathy and understanding. i ask what i can do to help things change. maybe some of you can do the same.
I think other victims weren't mentioned in this article mainly because, there are just too many to mention. I doubt Lezlie kept Karissa Boudreau out for any reason other than that.
What an amazing article. I don't know what else to say really. Talented writer and amazing insights.
