Literary extravaganza Word On The Street is back on the water (or, near it anyway) this Sunday, September 23 (11am-5pm, on the wharves behind the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic). Featuring a “literary theme park” with a marketplace showing off the wares of publishers and booksellers, readings, workshops and more authors than you can shake a manuscript at, Word On The Street can provide either the reading material or writing inspiration to cover you this fall. Lorri Neilsen Glenn, author, professor and former Halifax Poet Laureate, will read on Sunday from Threading Light: Explorations in Loss and Poetry on the Vibrant Voices stage (3pm) and conduct a writing workshop at Heritage Hall on Thursday, September 20 6:30-8pm (free, pre-register at thursdayword@gmail.com).

Just like Word On The Street itself, Threading Light has a little bit of everything. “I realized that much of my poetry was about loss,” says Neilsen Glenn. “And I began to wonder: why poetry? What is it about poetry that makes it such a perfect way to explore loss? This book is more of a bricolage—it's a mix of poetry and prose and dialogue and excerpts from others' work, from the serious to the comic—and so it was truly enjoyable to write. It pushed me.”

“Language brings us together, excites us, teaches us, moves us—takes us to places we can't go on our own. Reading and writing are solitary activities, but every reader and writer wants to be part of a community of like-minded folks,” says Neilsen Glenn of why community events like Word On The Street are so valuable. “We all want to close the book or back away from the keyboard and talk about the ideas and people and stories that we're smitten with. “
