Have you heard the expression “I laughed until I cried”? Well, that was me at the opening night of WeeTube, a clever and disturbing show brought to Halifax by Vancouver’s Theatre Replacement. The affable James Long and the amiable Maiko Bae Yamamoto begin by allowing the audience to choose a YouTube video to view, and then, while performing mundane and homey tasks such as baking cookies, they deliver the comments that people have posted online. Sound weird? You have no idea! The comments range from inane through moronic to truly offensive. The brilliance of this concept is that it reveals a hell of lot about the twisted world we live in without ever resorting to preaching or judging. If you want to be both entertained and engaged, switch off your computer and head to this show.
