It's a proud weekend: A lot of folks' favourite sex shop is growing up. Venus Envy(1598 Barrington) celebrates its 10th birthday this Saturday with super-cool sales and a kickin' party. The store spent a year down on Inglis and the last nine in its current digs. " we opened up...we had about two kinds of lubricant. Now I think we have 25," says owner Shelley Taylor. They also have "way more boy toys," more "high-end power-play items" such as floggers and a greater variety of condoms and harnesses. Venus Envy also has a sister store in Ottawa now; it opened in 2000. Taylor opened the first Venus Envy because she saw a market in the city that wasn't being properly served. "I felt that Halifax was this really cool community, with all kinds of students and arty types," she says. But "there wasn't a women's bookstore; there wasn't a sex-positive sex shop. And it just felt like it was really missing." The business thrived, she says, due to great staff, frugality and staying in tune with customer interests.
Plus, they know how to celebrate in style: Sex toys are all 20 percent off Saturday and they'll be giving out cupcakes to all and free gifts to people spending $50 or more. The first 20 paying customers Saturday get an "extra-special" gift. (Doors open at 10am.) Working all day? Party with the store at The Seahorse(1665 Argyle) Saturday night, at their "Perfect 10" anniversary bash, featuring The Maynards, The Stolen Minks and DJ Simon Thibault. What a great time for them.
