Chopin bistro

Posted by on Thu, Apr 24, 2008 at 10:07 AM

Are you an admirer of Polish composers? (Who isn’t?) Or maybe you just love a good brunch. (Who doesn’t?) Luckily, the downtown area now boasts a restaurant sure to please classical-music lovers and brunch enthusiasts alike: the niftily named Chopin Bistro (5171 Salter, former home of Atlantis Steak and Lobster). And yes, that restaurant name is a tip of the hat to good old Frédéric Chopin. After all, the bistro specializes in European cuisine. “I chose the name because Chopin was from central Europe...He was Polish; lived in France for a long time,” says owner Trish, who prefers not to give her last name. “Chopin is sort of a face of what we offer---French, Polish mix, you know.”

Atlantis Steak and Lobster came under new ownership---and had its format switched---early this year. While the restaurant still offers some seafood options, its specialty is now central European cuisine---cabbage rolls, perogies, pasta, bruschetta and more. Every Sunday, from 11am-2:30pm, the restaurant also holds a special brunch, which features a new menu each week and offers diners different dining options than those available at the restaurant regularly----potato pancakes, crepes, beef stroganoff and assorted salads have all been featured at past brunches. The Sunday brunch “is basically...a highlight of central European cuisine,” says Trish. Sunday also features a couple of other once-a-week treats: a fruit buffet and a European dessert buffet. “They’re all homemade desserts. They’re all freshly prepared. Everything is made from scratch,” says Trish about the offerings available at the buffet, which include “torte-type” desserts and rolled pastries. A “dessert buffet” sounds like something forged by faeries on a magical cloud in a dream world. Three cheers for brunch! Give the restaurant a call at 429-3875.
