Hpx Night Five: Part one

Timber Timbre and Boys Who Say No/Japanther

Each of these bands sounded amazing, but the shows were a little lackluster. Maybe it was the rain or the fact I’d been up until past 3am for the past four nights. I was pretty stoked to see Boys Who Say No, who I missed the night before. Trouble was it was an all-ages show at The Pavilion. But it was fun watching the band continuously request more from the monitors until the sound had to finally go up and tell them the monitors weren’t powerful enough.

I skipped Devil Eyes, who I saw the night before, and headed to St. Matthew’s Church to check out Timber Timbre (perhaps the hardest band name to spell drunk). I get his shtick, but man was it boring. Seems to me his talent comes from controlling the atmosphere of where he’s playing, but the church felt like a church with no lights on. His stuff just wasn’t big enough to control such a powerful and airy space.

Then it was off to Japanther, who I’d already saw but just love too much to pass up seeing again. Maybe it was the rain, but the Pavilion was pretty dead. Many of the people there weren’t even underage, which is frustrating given the stink that would arise if Hpx didn’t offer any all-age events like this.

Survey Asks

Do you agree with Halifax's school board cutting 152 teachers?

  • Yes, the board needs to meet its shrinking budget.
  • Only if managers and bureaucracy get a similar cut.
  • I don't care, I support the private education system.
  • No, giving young citizens the best education is too important to cut.
