Farmers' Market week

Posted by on Fri, Aug 3, 2012 at 4:00 AM

The first annual Farmers’ Market Week started Saturday and will be going on all week down at the Halifax Seaport Farmers' Market.

This celebration of local produce and crafts will be held at Farmers’ Markets all over Nova Scotia. Samples of some of the events include live music, picnics, and market suppers.

"Farmers' Markets really are a ray of hope, a place where young people are launching really creative new businesses and most definitely something to be celebrated," says Rowena Hopkins, executive director.

The farmers’ market is a big part of Halifax life, as most of us know. Most Haligonian's have been at the market at least once, if they don't frequent weekly for local groceries (this is the perfect time to visit, if you've never been).

"My goal for this week is that every Nova Scotian becomes aware that nearly everyone has a farmers' market within 30 minutes of their home, that these markets are places to start a business, access healthy food and amazing crafts and connect with local people, and that these markets don't just happen. People make them happen, and those people should be celebrated," says Hopkins.
