Hungry Chili to close

Posted by Tim Bousquet on Fri, Jul 30, 2010 at 4:02 PM

Hungry Chili will close at the end of August, victim of cascading business relocation. First, Curry Village expanded into the Dresden Row space once occupied by Baan Thai, and the owners of Baan Thai moved into the upstairs of the Blower Street building occupied by Hungry Chili. "He offered to buy us out," explains Hungry Chili's Molly Lee, "but it wasn't enough money." As Lee tells it, what followed was six months of problematic reconstruction of the building, resulting in reduced sales, and Hungry Chili decided to see the restaurant through to the end of the lease, then to close.

Asked if relocation is in the offering, Lee says no. "Seven years is enough."

Survey Asks

Do you agree with Halifax's school board cutting 152 teachers?

  • Yes, the board needs to meet its shrinking budget.
  • Only if managers and bureaucracy get a similar cut.
  • I don't care, I support the private education system.
  • No, giving young citizens the best education is too important to cut.

So sorry to hear that you have closed. This was one of the best places to eat in Halifax. A restaurant like this one should not close.

i only ate there once but enjoyed it. I had stopped by the other day to eat and it was closed...was an afternoon, may have been Saturday or Sunday. I was quite disappointed. A shame...what other asian restaurants have a good selection of spicy dishes???...and what are the hours of hungry chili til end of month...anyone know???

This is my favorite restaurant in Halifax and I miss it greatly. I believe Hungry Chili's combination of taste, service and price is far superior to what is available upstairs at Baan Thai, and after watching and experienced the problems inflicted by Mr. Woo during his renovations I can say without a doubt that I will not be dining at his establishment , ever.
Thanks for the great food Hungry Chili.

A true loss to the city's dining options. Excellent food at a good price served in a casual, cozy and relaxing atmosphere. Good fortune to the owners in the future. Thank you for many wonderful heart, and taste bud, warming lunches, and I shall visit for more before you close up shop.

This is devastating. I promised myself I would leave town before Hungry Chili ever did; that I couldn't fathom living in this town without it. I knew it was coming, but still. This breaks my heart.

Halifax won't be the same without it. This is and will always be the best place in the city for genuine and delicious Szechuan food. The notice in their front window tell a much more interesting story than just "reduced sales".
