A tree grows at The Coast
City program for sidewalk trees is back, with a vengeance budget.

Rather, the people of Halifax have a tree, which happens to be situated in front of The Coast office.
We moved into our 5567 Cunard Street digs in 2007. The new office is spacious and wonderfully situated in the north end, but it's always bothered me that the two-block stretch of Cunard between the Common and Gottingen Street had not one tree; it's just a sea of asphalt and concrete. This brings a stark, dead feel to the street, which includes a church, a day care, a bar, the historic Armoury and several residences.
I've long been keen on street trees, and followed along as city council zeroed out the tree budget with some sadness. When the federal government funded the restoration of the old Armoury, I was hopeful that we'd at least get a few trees on the street. But alas, nothing doing---$7 million was allocated for the restoration, with not a penny for trees.
So, earlier this year I pestered HRM urban forester John Simmons about getting a tree in front of the office, and lo and behold! one showed up over the weekend. I'm told that the city street tree budget is relatively well-funded this year (relative to $0), and that about 500 trees are being planted this spring.
I promised Simmons that I'd be sure to watch out for the tree, and water it should we ever get a few days without rain. I haven't had the chance to talk with him since the tree appeared, so I don't know what kind it is. He did say it wouldn't be a huge tree, as there are wires overhead. Still, the tree is most welcome, and a great addition to the street.
