Metro Transit manager won't reveal his own pay or raises

Hear Eddie Robar refuse to answer the question.

As negotiations between Metro Transit management and its workers' union enter the final day before a midnight strike deadline, management has issued a press release implying that the workers' position is unreasonable. "HRM put forward a new proposal Monday morning that would see Metro Transit operators be the highest paid in Atlantic Canada, while removing previous proposals around contracting out language and part-time bus operators," reads the release.

But asked last night about his own salary and raises, Metro Transit manager Eddie Robar refused to answer the question. In Halifax, unionized workers' pay is public record, but management salaries are not. Reporters spoke with Robar outside a city council meeting; I'm the one asking directly what Robar's salary is; hear him evade discussion of management's pay here:

Update, February 1, 10am: While Robar is silent on his exact salary, he is a "Director Level 1," at the city, meaning he makes between $120,000 and $145,000 annually.

Survey Asks

Do you agree with Halifax's school board cutting 152 teachers?

  • Yes, the board needs to meet its shrinking budget.
  • Only if managers and bureaucracy get a similar cut.
  • I don't care, I support the private education system.
  • No, giving young citizens the best education is too important to cut.

I understand that HRM wants to pay new bus drivers less than the current start rate. What is the justification for this? A new bus driver will provide the same service as a 10-year veteran. Did Eddie Robar, the new top gun at Metro Transit, start at a reduced rate? That's right, I forgot, he got $50,000 to $100,000 more than his predecessor's rate! Does a a new Regional Councillor get paid paid a reduced rate? Why pay a new bus driver less? Surely this will make recruitment and retention of staff more difficult.

Another highly paid incompetent civil servant. He should try the private sector to find out what accountability is all about.

What makes Mr. Robar worth $50,000 to $100,000 more than his immediate predecessor? A Toronto address? I understand that he commutes most weekends to Toronto and that he loves in an apartment in Halifax. It would be interesting to know if Metro Transit contributes to this arrangement. No doubt he also has a sweetheart termination agreement paying him a year's salary or more should he leave of be let go.

In Ontario all public sector earnings over $100,000 a year are made public.

Dexter should pass similar legislation and set the level at $75,000

And the union wants to protect the out dated practice of seniority giving the best shifts and best vacation choices to those at the top. The new employees are expected to be treated like shit - that is the union way. And then I heard Wilson whining on about weekends off and the divorce rate - what's with that ?

Nice salary range for a job offering an outdated transit service schedule. What does he do that makes him worth that much? Can't be that busy, look at how neat his desk is.

Seems to me that if I, the taxpayer, is paying your salary, those records should be made public. Otherwise, the city is not being very transparent, but this is something that we all know and hate.

Nice attempt at a fake-out to distract readers from the real issues Tim. Given that most of what Ken Wilson said were sticking points have been addressed, how about grilling Mr. Wilson as to why they say they are striking? Oops, silly me...

My question for Robar would be if he and his family rely daily on Metro Transit to get to and from work, shopping, get the kids to school and sports, etc. If not he should resign and offer his job to someone who actually does. Maybe then we will finally get a bus service that serves the public and entices more people to use it. The sustainability problem is not caused by 'operators' making too much $$ [they certainly don't] but by astounding mismanagement that has gone unpunished for decades and results in a service that is so bad that it's no alternative for anyone who can afford a car

HRM can get that information for us right? "Yeah we can, but you have to understand that..."
