This school year will mark the fifth annual Alternative Orientation Series for new and returning Dalhousie students. ALT 101 is an opportunity to “introduce and expose the student population to the diversity of communities in Halifax,” says Sébastien Labelle, a member of the Nova Scotia Public Interest Research Group (NSPIRG) Board of Directors.
The ALT 101 series focuses on building bridges between campus and the broader community. At a school like Dal where students are coming from all over the world, says Labelle, it’s especially important to curb the campus isolation that tends to occur.
Students can expect events to run through the month of September, with up to 16 organizations playing a part. Event topics will run the gamut from gardening and food sovereignty to women’s and trans issues. See full details on the Halifax ALT 101 Facebook page.
ALT 101 began as an NSPIRG project, born of the perceived need for an alternative to frosh festivities. “Frosh usually centres on the campus itself---introducing students to each other,” says Labelle. ALT 101 is picking up where frosh leaves off, making a concerted effort to “...encourage students to not only observe but also get involved in the various communities in Halifax.”
