Parent "can’t see a fit between myself and the federal Conservative party"

Defense minister Peter MacKay, plus Conservative inaction in Copenhagen, disillusions former minister of the environment

I called former PC minister of the environment Mark Parent to ask for his reaction to HRM's back-tracking on the Blue Mountain-Birch Cove Lakes wilderness area, but he stayed on the line to discuss his present and future plans.

"I’m working on a couple of books," he told me. "I’m writing a mystery--- it starts with the discovery, by a character loosely based on myself, of a raped and murdered page in the storeroom of the legislature. I’ve never written fiction before, so I’m having fun. I’m on chapter 10, I keep working it over. And I’m also working on another book, a more academic book. I’m doing a bit of preaching, probably going back to the church, do some political stuff.

"They want me to run federally, and I just can’t see a fit between myself and the federal Conservative party right now," he said.

Why's that?

"Well, with Copenhagen, with Afghanistan. It puzzles me that Peter [MacKay] can---because his sister was my aide. You know, I don’t always agree with Peter, but he’s a pretty astute politician. On the Afghan thing, I just don’t understand why they had to go after Colvin instead of just saying, 'we changed, obviously we need to change more,' you know? It would have been so easy. Now the issue, now the story is not so much what happened with detainees, but why all the obfuscation and cover-up?"

Survey Asks

Do you agree with Halifax's school board cutting 152 teachers?

  • Yes, the board needs to meet its shrinking budget.
  • Only if managers and bureaucracy get a similar cut.
  • I don't care, I support the private education system.
  • No, giving young citizens the best education is too important to cut.
