Elizabeth May will deliver your mail to PM

Green party leader bringing a mailbag full of green letters to Copenhagen. You can give her a letter for Stephen Harper at a rally this Thursday.

Green party leader, Elizabeth May is carrying dozens of letters from Canadians demanding that Stephen Harper agree to reduce Canada’s greenhouse emissions. May says she plans to personally deliver them to Harper at the climate-change summit in Copenhagen.

“I don’t know if he’s ever read anything about climate change,” May told the Coast from Sidney, B.C.

Haligonians will have the chance to add their own letters to May’s satchel; this Thursday, Nova Scotian greens will rally at the Halifax Airport Hotel to send her off.

May is flying to Copenhagen on her own dime, so it’s unclear whether she’ll be able to get close enough Harper to make her delivery.

When it comes to serious action on climate change, “Harper has been playing the role of saboteur,” said May. She added that if not for public pressure, the prime minister would not bother to go to the summit.

May says she hopes the letters, along with pressure from other world leaders such as Gordon Brown and Nicolas Sarkozy will convince the prime minister that climate change is a threat to humanity.

When asked if she really thought Harper’s withered heart could grow, May struggled to stay positive.

“If you only talk about what’s realistic, nothing will ever happen,” said May. “It’s easy to be cynical,” adding, “[Harper] may just get in the way of negotiations.”

May leaves for Copenhagen right after the rally. There she'll speak on a panel with European green party leaders, including Nobel Prize-winning environmental activist, Wangari Maatha.

Survey Asks

Do you agree with Halifax's school board cutting 152 teachers?

  • Yes, the board needs to meet its shrinking budget.
  • Only if managers and bureaucracy get a similar cut.
  • I don't care, I support the private education system.
  • No, giving young citizens the best education is too important to cut.
