Stigma Towards the Poor

Posted on Tue, Apr 5, 2011 at 3:07 PM

Halifax has a lot of homeless individuals living on the streets because of poverty. They live very hard lives and no one knows their life stories. I hate how individuals place stigma upon these individuals without knowing them personally; there have been numerous times where I have been walking down the street with friends and asked for change by one of these individuals. When walking away I often hear my friend say something along the lines of: "They're just looking for money to buy their drugs/alcohol." They do not know what the individual needs the money for because they didn't stop and talk to them. They just placed a stigma upon them, saying that all homeless people must be drug users or alcoholics. I just feel that people should not place judgement upon the homeless individuals in Halifax and should instead stop and think; do I really know this person? —A Frustrated Sociology Student
