Bo Gus, they have a way to enhance the existing imagery to 3D in post-production. I'm not sure I understand the technical aspects of the procedure. For the most part, I agree with you, though I thought Hugo, Pina and Jackass 3D were all improved by the tech (though they were all shot in 3D to begin with).
How are films not originally shot using 3D cameras retrofitted to be 3D?
It is just a question of curiosity, as 3D is yet another useless techno-trick trying to pander to the videogame generation and not really worthy of much attention.
I vote that all attention and even reference to 3D re-releases be held UNTIL SUCH TIME AS "The Empire Strikes Back" is re-released in 3D. Brutally, this will not happen until 2016, so you shall have some time to bide through theatrical reissues of Disney's "Treasure Planet," "Monster-In-Law," "The Da Vinci Code," "Van Helsing," and other such memorable projects screaming for further (spatial as well as thematic) depth.
If Bergman, Tarkovsky, Renoir, et al. suddenly become objects of three-dimensional revision, do proceed to re-examine the trend at once from all critical perspectives.
