“There’s no queer film festival east of Montreal,” says Krista Davis, explaining the inspiration for OUTeast, the Halifax queer film festival planned for spring 2012, organized by Davis, Jenna Dufton and Andria Wilson. “There’s tons west of Montreal, in cities like London, Ontario and Guelph, and bigger cities like Toronto and Vancouver. And Halifax is so gay! There’s such a huge audience for it.”

The coming out party for next year’s OUTeast takes place this Friday, April 8 at the Company House (2202 Gottingen Street), 9pm. The cost is $7 for a slew of queer film-inspired musical and variety performances---including by Stewart Legere, Amelia Curran, Eureka Love, Ria Mae, Ryan MacGrath and more---short films and dancing until close with DJ Anderoc.

“We want to take on the challenge of finding really good queer movies to educate and challenge audiences,” says Davis about the festival. “And in addition to challenging audiences, we want to promote the creation of local queer work. We've met with some really great, young local filmmakers who are really excited to have this to work towards.”

Davis is quick to give props to the gay content film programming in Halifax before, including the Reel OUT! Halifax GLBTQ Film Fest that happens during Pride Week, and That’s So Gay at the Atlantic Film Festival. In fact, the organizers of OUTeast are all contract staff with the AFF, and AFF director Lia Rinaldo is on the board of the group. “She’s really right behind us with this.”

Now comes the grant writing. OUTeast has already received a provincial Cultural Activities Grant to help brand the festival and create these events to help spread awareness for the festival. “We’d like do do a couple of these shows to build partnerships and audiences.”

And Davis is a filmmaker herself, having made three short films since graduating from NSCAD’s Media Arts program, including the hilarious Uh Uh, No Way, which you can see here:
