Guilt, Guilt, Go Away

Now that that I’ve seen two thirds of the shows, scheduling the other ten now requires the same skill set as mounting the Allied invasion. I’ve spent lots of time pouring over the schedule, and I believe that I can fit it all in. Cross your fingers and wish me luck!
Taryn Della is bold, in both senses of the word. She is loud and brassy and larger than life, as well as brave and forthright. Her latest one woman show Guilt, Guilt, Go Away is a nice mix of slightly edgy standup and an easy, approachable conversational style. The topic is thought-provoking: Della lays her bundle of guilt (everything from body image issues to black mother guilt) on the floor, and inspires the audience to do the same. As an added bonus, local spoken word artist El Jones made an appearance to share a couple of her extremely moving poems about the societal pressures on young black girls. There are plenty of laugh-out-loud moments in this show, but I found it somehow less ephemeral than most comedy. A show like this that offers lots to laugh about and lots to think about is like having your cake and eating it too—-without the guilt.
