Xara bears fruit with Tree of Life

It’s been just over a year since the young women’s choir Xara burst onto Halifax’s music scene, but in that short time, devotees have come to expect the unexpected. Yes, there is always haunting choral music, but there has also been a startling variety of choreography and visuals to go with it.
Xara’s March 20th offering entitled Tree of Life will be no exception. Visual artist Sarah Irwin has created a fifteen foot tree made primarily from paper that will be the centerpiece to the concert. As well, spoken word artist Shauntay Grant and the creative team of Xara have written a piece called "From Here" that uses the metaphor of a tree to describe a young woman’s experiences moving from the freedom of childhood to the complications of adulthood.
“Xara's interdisciplinary performance style is a soulful adventure for us,” says Xara’s conductor Christina Murray. “Because we are doing something that there is no model for, we are always refining and pushing new boundaries. This concert will be the most visual yet, but it also has the strongest narrative.
“Coming to Tree of Life will give audiences the chance to hear and see something beautiful, challenging, and thoughtful. But it will also give them the opportunity to be part of the redefinition of an art form!”
Saturday March 20th at 7:30 pm at St. Matthew’s United Church, 1479 Barrington Street.
