Visual Arts Hamish Fulton steps into Halifax
Join the acclaimed walking artist this Thursday and Friday.

Get your shoes on. Renowned British artist Hamish Fulton is coming to Halifax. Fulton’s art is hard to classify: since 1969 he’s been conducting solo and group walks around the world, including Iceland, Bolivia, Tibet and Japan. Fulton extends the tradition of landscape painting or sculpture, and although his walking projects often result in photos, text, wall paintings or publications, there is “no construction of a product,” he explains, calling from the States. There’s no trace of his path: “It looks the same before and after.”
Recently Fulton, who had a large exhibition at the Tate Britain in 2002, orchestrated a group walk in Valencia. Participants gathered in a small square near a cathedral, walking the length of each eight-metre stone wall in a 15-minute span, prompted by the chimes of the cathedral bell. Fulton describes the experience of moving through a public space so slowly and silently as meditative.
Some local artists explore walking as part of their individual practices as well. Eryn Foster has conducted two long-distance walks around the Maritimes. For last week’s Go North! festival, NSCAD professor Barbara Lounder, who’s hosting Fulton in town, created 161 walking sticks for 161 Gallon Gallery, free to the public to take on the road, a subtle performance spanning the north end.
On September 17 at NSCAD’s Port Campus (1:30-5:30pm, room P205), Fulton will give an introduction to his work, following by an outdoor participatory walk. The next day (1:30-5:30pm, Foundation presentation area, second floor), he’ll give an artist presentation, followed by a walking group event. Both events are open to the public.
