Theatre Review: Jake's Gift

Heart-wrenching play is a must-see.

Posted by Kate Watson on Thu, May 14, 2009 at 8:27 AM

If you only see one play at this year’s SuperNova Festival, make it Jake’s Gift. This beautifully polished little gem will leave you fumbling for tissues as it brings to life the story of bright and spunky 10-year-old French girl named Isabelle and her relationship with Jake, a crusty Canadian octogenarian who has returned to Juno beach on the 60th anniversary of D-day. It’s lovely to watch the exchange of wisdom between old and young—an exchange, as this play brilliantly points out, that flows both ways. Isabelle and Jake change each other, and as a result, change the audience, too. Vancouver’s Julie Mackey does a remarkable job of realizing each character, so much so that by the end of the show you may well have forgotten this is a one-woman play.

Survey Asks

Do you agree with Halifax's school board cutting 152 teachers?

  • Yes, the board needs to meet its shrinking budget.
  • Only if managers and bureaucracy get a similar cut.
  • I don't care, I support the private education system.
  • No, giving young citizens the best education is too important to cut.

I saw Jake's Gift last night and loved it. Julia Mackey does an amazing job of transforming between characters and is captivating to watch. This is a beautiful story of rememberance and all should see it.

Gift is about the importance of remembrance. It builds new relationships. Jake’s Gift is an award winning Canadian play. I have viewed all his Gifts and find them wonderful and nice one.

The Zoom H4n, which I'm trying to talk myself into, has a stereo pair and can accept two outboard mikes as well. Probably more useful for musicians (guilty) than for journalists, but it's only $300.
