Ilan Sandler and Graeme Patterson make Sobey Award longlist

Local artists eligible for the $50,000 annual prize.

The longlist for the $50,000 Sobey Art Award, given annually to a Canadian artist under 40 who has exhibited in a public or commercial art gallery within 18 months of being nominated, was announced this week. The list includes Graeme Patterson, best known for his lovely Woodrow exhibition at the AGNS, which depicts a fictionalized version of his family’s hometown through sculpture, animation and video, and Ilan Sandler, who represented Canada at the Busan Biennale* earlier this year. "I was thrilled and honoured to hear that I've been selected for the Sobey Art Award's Long List," says Sandler. His 228cm-tall bronze sculpture, An Ear to the Sky, now resides permanently in the South Korean city’s waterside park. This left-side ear channels sounds recorded here in Halifax by its companion right ear, which you might remember from 2003 when it was anchored on the waterfront, recording the harbour’s ambient sounds.

The shortlist is announced on May 1, with selected works exhibited at the AGNS from September 5-November 5. The winner will be announced during a gala event on October 15.
