Battle SNAP!

Posted by Sue Carter Flinn on Thu, Apr 17, 2008 at 11:15 AM

On Tuesday, April 22 at the Seahorse (1659 Argyle), local photographers throw down at the first-ever Battle SNAP, a friendly competition that will determine who's frame is the finest. Photographers show their work for just that night and everyone in the bar gets to vote, regardless of whether or not your idea of art includes pictures of passed-out roommates and kitty-cats. According to organizer Chris Smith, "The name Battle SNAP was inspired by hip-hop DJs and MCs who constantly battle in competitions. It's because of such friendly competitions that these artists keep working so hard to improve. My plan is to apply the same philosophy to photography so that all who are involved will learn from one another and collectively grow as artists. Aside from that, the other goal is simply to get a group of photographers in one room so that they can get to know one another better and work to build a stronger photo community." Really, though, who doesn't want to be part of a community that offers prizes, including printing from Carsand-Mosher and studio time at Aperture Studios. Each photo entered costs $5 (rules at battlesnap.com), but it's free to vote and to hear live music thanks to Music Nova Scotia

's

open-mic night.
